Woodworking Plans for Free Tools of the Trade

Before you begin, there are several woodworking tools and materials you’ll need. Having these readily available to complete the following projects will make the process much easier.

Each woodworking project may require different tools but a few items you should have include:

  • Jigsaw or miter saw
  • High-quality wood of your choice (various sizes and shapes)
  • Cordless drill and bits
  • Measuring tape
  • Sander
  • Water-resistant wood glue
  • Wood stain/varnish/paint

Restoring a deck will require most, if not all of the above tools. The proper tools will make restoring your deck safer and more effective.

In addition to these tools, you’ll need adequate safety gear. Safety glasses, closed-toe shoes, and a face mask are necessary for your protection. Consider gloves and clothing that cover your arms and legs for extra protection while sanding and cleaning.

The Wooden Chopping Board

One of the first projects nearly every beginner woodworker starts with is the wooden chopping board. There are many variations to crafting this board and you can add your own flourishes to make it more useful based on your needs.

For this project you’ll need the following materials:

  • Four 3/4” x 3/4” diameter dowels for bottom feet
  • Three 20” x 3-1/2” maple boards
  • Two 23-1/2” x 1/2” x 3/4” walnut strips for handles
  • Two 5” x 1/2” diameter dowels for handles

Start by marking placing all the three maple boards and the two walnut strips together, placing the walnut strips between the boards. Mark the arcs on each side of the three maple boards and cut. Drill 1/2” holes on both ends of the walnut strips, 3/4” in from the ends.

Glue the maple boards and walnut strips and press them together in a clamp until dry. Unclamp the boards and sand them on both sides.

Drill four 3/4” diameter holes 1/2” deep in all four corners on the backside of the board. Glue the 3/4” dowel feet into the holes. Add a coat of food-safe wood oil or stain, and voila!

A stacked recycling and organizing tower is an easy woodworking project that offers function and looks to your home.

For this project, you’ll need six plastic containers or baskets of the same size and depth. Select containers that are wider on top and narrower towards the bottom. You want the front rack to catch and hold the area near the top of your container.

For this project, you’ll need:

  • Four 2”x2” about 68” long frame pieces (depends on container size)
  • Ten to twelve 2”x2” about 15” long rungs (depends on container size)
  • Four 2”x2” of about 6” to 12” long crosspieces (depends on container size).
  • 2-1/2” screws

The space between the horizontal rungs, crosspieces, and frames depends on the size of your container. Place the front rungs about 3-1/2” to 4” higher than the back to angle the containers.

Start by attaching half of the rungs between two frame pieces to create a ladder. The front frame bottom rung should attach 7-1/2” from the bottom end of the frame pieces. The bottom rung of the back frame should be about 3” to 4” from the bottom.

Next, attach the four cross pieces to the back frame and then attach the front frame. For an added touch, paint or stain the wood to fit your decor.
